While not perfect, Media Pro is a great option and even superior to Lightroom for long term cataloging in the respect it can keep tabs on almost any digital file you may encounter including PDF, text documents even a myriad of audio files, and all sorts of files you may require in your daily tasks. It is a very affordable option that has survived the test of time. and even when it languished in obscurity after MS bought it. I have been using it since it was iView Media Pro. Media Pro is the only option you listed that I have extensive familiarity with. If it was not good enough to be post processed, chances are the image will never be looked at again. I have found that if that I rarely look for any old images except for those which were edited. When that is done I make a separate folder of copies of all of my 'fix' files for the year. At the end of every year, I do a lot of review and additional editing and have been making blurb books as family gifts and to preserve my best work. I print quite a lot and before printing I make copies and store in my print files which are also backed up periodically. I also try to avoid more than one drive in use at a time. Also I backup at least 3 levels deep and I try to store drive sets in different locations. I could spend a lot more time explaining some of the fine points of my archiving but I think you get the idea.īTW, I will never use automated backup software.

Those fixed tiff files are stored with the original raws and jpegs whenever possible. Once processed, I add 'fix' to the name of the tiff file.

When I post process a file, I save it as a TIFF so I do not need Adobe software to review the files. The jpegs help me cull and delete the losers but use of jpegs also means I do not need specific software to review my raw files. I add a short description for example the event or location. I maintain my files by date the same way they are automatically downloaded from the camera. I organize my archives without the use of software. I also decided I really don't like Adobe and don't want to rely on that company in the future. Well, I invested a lot of time and made a mistake and lost my tags/keywording.

Sure the software makers claim (if you do everything right) they can deal with most or all of these issues.

but so far most in your list that I've tried dont do ALL that LR does for meĭo you really want to rely on a specific software solution to organize your images? Do you want to pay for Lightroom or other software forever? What happens when your software is no longer compatible with your operating system? What happens when you want to take old storage devices and copy to newer drives? How many backups do you want and will each be useful with the software you use to organize your images?ĭo you want to use tags or keywords to help you find images? Are you exactly sure which tags and keywords you want now and in the future? Are you absolutely consistent in using them? Now if someone comes up with a true good alternative I'll happily hop onto that train. That and the fact that its almost a 'one stop shop' in that it will do 95% of m,y image proccesing as well makes it the only thing i'll look at at the moment.

its not single platform which while Im now much more Apple focused I can still run it on someone elses windows machine. This is one of the reasons I like LR so much.

Suggestions? Experiences? Am I just full of it and need to shut up and settle for Lr? I've tried Photo Mechanic but never seemed to 'get it.' So the question is what are people using as their DAM if they aren't relying on Lr? I obviously don't need a corporate level tool, so that cuts out a lot of the things I found via a Google search. I've worked with some, but all have fallen short of the one thing Lr does, (though not particularly well) cataloging images. There are several RAW converters, first pass develop tools, and such that are superior to Lr.
